Tina shares her top 5 water safety tips to stay safe in the water this summer.

As the summer holidays approach, that means more time splashing, swimming, and enjoying our beautiful North Devon coastline. Whether you’re heading to Westward Ho! beach, exploring the Tarka Trail riverside, or enjoying a pool day, it’s important to stay safe.

We asked Tina to share her top 5 pieces of advice to stay safe in the water this summer.

Know your environment.

Tides and currents can change quickly. Always check tide times before heading out, and choose lifeguarded beaches whenever possible. Swim between the red and yellow flags – and avoid surfing areas marked with black and white flags or no flags at all.

Always supervise young swimmers.

Even shallow water can pose risks. Keep children within arm’s reach and stay alert around any body of water, especially if swimmers are young or less confident.

Wear the right swim gear.

Bright coloured costumes are easier to spot! Go for pink, red or orange if you can. Paddleboarding or kayaking? Always wear a properly fitted life jacket – even if you're a strong swimmer. And don’t forget SPF!

Learn essential water safety skills.

Knowing how to float, tread water, and call for help can make all the difference. We do regular safety weeks at Make Waves so that these skills become more natural. Our next safety week commences Monday the 28th of July.

Respect the water.

Rivers, harbours, and rock pools can hide unexpected dangers. Enter feet first, avoid diving into unknown water, and always stay aware of slippery rocks and sudden drops.

Stay safe, have fun, and enjoy everything the water has to offer this summer!
